A new update to the problem with my laptop. After 32 minutes with Dell
Support, a man who barely spoke english is telling me that I need a new
motherboard, even though the the plug for the headphone jack is a soundcard
(part M1306) we went through the entire thing, Dell tech support is by far
the wost I have ever dealt with, and doing IT support for 8 years now is
saying alot. I am missing an O key, they tell me I need a completely new
keyboard over 600 dollars. It really makes me want to buy another computer
from a company who makes specific components for their products and then
takes it upon themselves to charge that absolute most they can to maximize
profits because my o key (a 2 cent piece of plastic broke off while I was
typing..UGH

If cost is an issue, and you don't need the plug all the time, you can get
USB "sound cards" like
http://cgi.ebay.ca/USB-2-0-5-1-CH-Po...QQcmdZViewItem
(not affiliated with the auction at all).

I'd probably haul it in to a local electronics repair place, and show them
what needs to be fixed. When I blew the fans out on my 9100, it seems to me
that the jack is pretty accessible.

you can getthe parts you need at parts-people.com
the keyboard is only $30 or so.
i've replaced a bunch of them.
they may also have the other part you need.
dont give up on dell so quickly, they really are better overall than
most other companies.
just learn how to work around them.

Sounds like a phone monkey error. Replacement I picked up for an 1100 was
like $25 from Dell a few months ago.......
