I need to replace my Sony 48X CD-RW Drive in my Dell Dimension 8300
and was wondering what would be the be drive to get (IDE linked). I
was looking into get one from Dell, but they have so many offerings, I
was wondering if some of you might have gone through this process
recently and determined which is the best to get. My system is out of
warranty, so, of course, Dell is not going to replace it.

Thanks

Sony CD-RW drives bite the dust now and then, like any other brand, but I have
been satisfied with them overall. Hitachi/LG, Liteon, and Samsung are the other
suppliers of these drives, and they are also quite good. I'm not sure how well
NEC drives work, 'cause I have very little experience with them. After these
brands, I think it's a real crapshoot.

You should be able to find a drive with a black bezel to match your system.
Replacement is really easy with the Dell Dimension 8000 series chassis.

Should I look at getting it from Dell or other sources (Dell has so
many available, I'm not sure which to look at)? Will most drives fit
the 8300? And do they all have the same cable connector?

Thanks

Charliec,
For the same amount of money you may be spending through dell, here is an
alternative site that I have only heard good things about. You should be
able to get a bigger bang for the buck.

The newegg recommendation is a good one. As long as you get the right
color, they'll all fit. in fact, why get a CD-RW at all? Go for a DVD
burner. Plugs right in the same spot and also burns CD-RWs.

For example, this Samsung even comes with Lightscribe to laser the label
into the disk (requires special disks to do that though). Can be used with
just about any format or disk.

Save your money. These are commodity items and there is nothing special about
a CD-RW bought from Dell, except the expensive sticker with Dell part number on
it. Your system uses an IDE/ATAPI CD-RW with very much standardized connectors
for power and data, standard jumper settings and physical position, and a
standard audio connector... Ben Myers

be carfull selectng agee that you should just buy a dvdrw dive. does what
ou want plus more. but be careful sellecting such a drive at newegg. they
are a great source but sell many wtihout software which your probably need.
also several are sata type whch ae not driect plug replacements for your
current drive. i sugest this one for you becuase it comes with software
(others are ambigious about the software, and many clearly do not include
it).

in english this time...
i agee that you should just buy a dvdrw drive to replace your defective. a
dvdrw does what
your cdrw did plus more. but be careful sellecting such a drive at newegg.
they are a great source but sell many drives wtihout software which your
probably need. and they sell several that are sata type whch ae not driect
plug replacements for your current drive. i sugest this one for you becuase
it has the right connector for a direct plug replacement and becuase it
comes with software (others drives on newegg are ambigious about weather
they come with the software or not - the software is necessary to burn
cd/dvd projects as well as decode dvd moveies to play them).
