Press power button, 2 outer LEDS flash once, the right LED (battery?
continues to flash amber a few times, then quits. No sound at all
screen remains black throughout. Same result whether AC adapter i
attached or not. Last 2 times used, received a low power warning, so
attached to AC, but the computer shut down anyway. Noticed that i
seemed to be taking longer to recharge recently, with shorter batter
'life'.
How do i diagnose whether its a problem with the battery (original), A
adapter, or something else ? Have just 'inherited' this old computer
not familiar with it, and not overly technical. Thanks

Sounds like a dead battery because the P/S adapter is not charging,
right? When you plug-in the adapter an LED should come on...if
not...assume you need a new adapter. Cheap from eBay...$12 vs $70
from Dell.

Before you do anything Marky, take the battery out and then try it.

Thanks Bob, Bill. I appreciate the quick replies. Removed the battery
attached the AC adapter and pushed the power button - no LED's, n
response whatsoever - a dead parrot. May I conclude, therefore, that th
AC adapter is the problem ? (Of course, the battery might also b
defective, I suppose

Hello Marky! Yes there is a very good chance that both the AC adapter
and the battery is bad. But there is no way anybody can say with 100%
certainty. As the power regulators inside the laptop could cause the
same problems unfortunately.
