Will Dell laptop run off of a/c power only?

Hello to the group.

I'm trying to help a friend with a Dell Inspiron 1150 Laptop do a
little troubleshooting.

Laptop won't power up, appears very dead except the power and battery
lights flash continuously and very rapidly. The user's manual says to
replace the battery. Ok, I can do that.

But shouldn't the laptop power up with only the a/c power module being
plugged in? I held the power on button down for a 20 seconds, but the
lights continue to flash as before.

I removed the battery and tried the same thing. Doesn't power up.

So the question is.... should it power up on just the a/c power
module?

Thanks.

Bob

Yes, you should be able to power on the laptop with just the AC adapter
and no battery whatsoever.

It's not broken. It's...advanced.

I think you have bigger problems than a dead battery, and that after you
replace the battery, the laptop still won't power up.

Been there, done that.
Try removing the battery completely and see if the AC power
supply will boot the unit.

With the battery totally removed, it's the same symptom, rapidly
flashing power and battery lights. No change with the battery in or
out.

I'm thinking it's probably not the battery since a few people are
saying that the power supply should operate the laptop without the
battery even being plugged in.

Yes, it's looking like that. Before he sends it in for repair, I
thought it was worth a shot to find out if it should operate on the ac
supply with no battery. Most laptops do that, but I've seen a lot of
comments on Inspiron 1150 power problems and strange behavior.
