I have an old laptop (a Dell Latitude LM) running Windows 98 FE. I would
like to get this laptop online wirelessly, so I thought I would perform a
little test. I have a Linksys Wireless G Notebook Adapter in another laptop
(running XP home), and I tried to install this card on the Dell Latitude LM.
After many attempts, the software always installs completely and correctly,
but the system will not recognize the card, either in the Linksys settings
or the control panel. Also, the lights on the card are always dark, so it
appears as though it is not being supplied power at all when it is in the
Latitude.

I have three questions regarding this failure.

1) The Linksys Wireless G Notebook Adapter for sure is CardBus. I've looked
at the specification (what I could find) for the Dell Latitude LM, and it
specifies "Data width (maximum): 32 bits" for the PCMCIA, although it does
not specifically mention "CardBus". Could this be a PCMCIA compatibility
problem? The fact that the card does not appear to have power leads me to
believe this might be the case.

2) The Dell is running 98 FE, and the specs for the Linksys Card state 98 SE
or above is required, so this may indeed be the problem. However, if this
was the problem, I would have assumed that the system would be able to at
least identify a PCMCIA card in the slot, but just not be able to utilize it
properly due to the OS. Are there any wireless notebook adapters out there
that do not require Windows 98 SE or higher? Or more specifically, is there
a suitable wireless adapter for my Dell, based on its current
specifications?

3) I'm having a hard time solving this one. What are my cheapest (above the
cost of the wireless card) options for getting this laptop online
wirelessly?

Thanks for any and all help.
