I'm not sure if this group is still functional/active...

I ordered an Inspiron desktop Sept. 15th and I just received
a notice that it's been delayed a second time, estimated ship
date is now Oct. 17.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

The company assembling the computers for Dell bought a lot of sub-prime mortgage
securities and is now in a cash flow crunch? Michael Dell foolishly bought
sub-prime paper?

I can anticipate more slowdowns in the production of computers, as the worldwide
economy continues to migrate south.

Why not ask Dell? Threaten to cancel. But then, what would you buy? A piece
of consumer junk at Best Buy? With service by the Geek Squad? Never!

The only way to find out (my apologies in advance) is to call Dell Home or
Small Business Sales - or customer service.

They at one time had the capacity to view the order and identify which
component(s) are causing the delay.

In those cases in the past, I would just modify the order (or cancel and
create a new order) around a given component to avoid the backlog.

If it makes you feel any better, I recently had a similar issue with a
Lenovo order - which I subsequently cancelled.

That won't help either. I ordered a Laptop with the estimated ship on
09/30. I got the delay routine, extending to 10/29. I, then, got an email
saying that it was to be delayed again and I had to contact Dell to keep
the order from being cancelled.

I contacted Dell (3 separate calls no less) noting that I wanted to keep
the laptop on order. In addition, I went to their chat saying the same
thing (I kept the log) because of what I read on Dell Hell.

Guess what? Dell cancelled my order anyway. I think their reason was that
I was to receive additional things with my order which, I think, has now
been recinded.

Dell's "Customer Service" is, apparently, offshore with people who have
difficulty understanding the english language and provide not just no help
but very bad help.

Pure sleeze.
