depends on the machine... some older laptops required it for power
management to work correctly.

thank you Christopher, it's a Latitude 610 with windows 2000 SP3. I just
bought a new battery and would like it to last a little longer than the
old one. Would it help if I install the "OS Updates"?

thx

If the battery is brand-new, give it a few cycles of charge-discharge before
it reaches maximum capacity.

You would be well-advised to apply Service Pack 4 and all subsequent
security updates.

martain, i do not know exactly what the 'dell os updates' do for win2k and
this system, may be security related, may be power related, but may also be
something else. but they should be installed unless you rebuilt the system
from scratch yourself. also, if you rebuild your machine from scratch and
want to extend the time the machines operates on battery as log as possible,
be sure to download/install the 'intel speedstep' utility which throttles
the processor speed back when on battery and also when no demands are on the
cpu (idle). also, the more recent bios updates (last/latest version is a16)
include several power management related updates ranging from the battery
meter report great acuracy to display issues on returning from suspend.
