Greetings,

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 running Windows XP Home with SP2 and all of
Microsoft's Updates.

I reinstalled the OS with the Dell Reinstallation CD provided with this
computer. I have also used the Drivers and Utilities disk to install the
drivers that were designated for my system.

There are other utilities that are listed on the CD.

Are Dell Quick Set, Dell 32-bit Diagnostics for Recourse CD, and Dell
Notebook System Software necessary to download?

I would appreciate and help, comments, and suggestions in this matter.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Leigh

I don't install any of them. They have some useful features, I suppose,
but the add extra running processes that I don't think you need.

I'd run awhile without them and see if you feel like you're missing
anything.

I concur with Mr. Scales. Minimalist approach is best.

Thanks Tom and S.Lewis,

I installed only what was necessary for my system and left the rest alone. I
appreciate your comments. I will take the minimalist approach.

Hi,

My name is Todd and I'm with Dell's online outreach program. While th
others are really up to you to decide whether or not to install, w
normally recommend the Dell Notebook System Software be installed whe
installing drivers. It helps control some of the communication
systems on the notebook, such as the USB controllers.

Does it have to be installed? No, not really. Your system wil
probably work fine without it. If you start to get weird errors o
some components are not responding correctly you may want to instal
it.

Just for information, when we help customers to reinstall we normall
suggest drivers be installed in this order:

Dell Notebook System Software
Chipset
Video
Network

After that the order isn't really all that important and it's persona
preference at that point.

The Dell diagnostics can also be run off the Dell Drivers & Utilitie
CD if you boot from it, so there isn't a need to install it directly.

If you have any other questions please let me know. I'll stop back t
see if I can be of further hope.

Thank you,

Todd

Todd,

If you're really a Dell advocate, that's disappointing, because you are
absolutely 100% wrong. The Dell Notebook System Software has controls
no hardware. The USB ports are properly installed with the Chipset
software as are all the other motherboard devices that do not have their
own driver (such as video and network).

In addition, order IS important, as the chipset software should ALWAYS
be installed first.

Even worse, there is no such thing as Dell Notebook System Software.
Check the download page for the I6400. There is Dell Support, which is
not necessary. There is Dell diagnostics, which is not necessary. There
is Dell Quickset, which is not necessary.

Let's just hope you're new at this. If so, you might want to do some
searches of older posts on this newsgroup, as the regulars here appear
to know more about your products than you do.

Tom

I might also add that it's pretty tiring to see "Dell CA's" pop into this
group to address "slam dunk"/fairly generic questions that could be (and
are) already addressed by any number of posters in this group, only to see
the REALLY difficult problems (that can perhaps only be solved by "Dell
personnel") go unresponded to by you and the rest of the "Dell CA Team".

You guys are either spread too thin or you're picking your battles very
poorly, imo.

How about grabbing some of the posts in here where people are agitated due
to unresponsive customer service or poor technical support? We can't do
anything about that but, in theory, you can.

-Stew

I'd be shocked if you get a reply. I think the world's record for
number of posts by a "Dell CA" is two. These guys appear and disappear
and only show up about every weeks.

It's particularly sad that he picked an easy and blew it!

As I said when he first posted, it is unlikely that he is a Dell employee.

Let's hope so.

Perhaps the entire "Dell CA" thing is a ruse.
