I am surprised that there has been no mention, at least that I could
find, of the problem encountered with a number of Vostro 1500 laptops.
The problem relates to the slow keyboard response before text shows up
on the screen. Very disorienting while typing and correcting any text.
After much frustration and searching I finally found a part of the
solution that worked for me and that was to disable PCMService.
You may want to check the following site for other comments.

i posted here about this at least once before. nobody seemed to care which
suggested to me that it wasn't very wide spread... but i don't think the
thing your found is the culprit...
i suspect that your typing lag problem has to with the ie7 anti-phising
scheme being enabled and that you have a lot of entries in your restricted
sites list. i believe that norton populates the restricted sites list with
tones of sites in a feeble attempt to prevent you from getting trojans. but
it really isn't an effective method to deal with this and has other
repercussions such as this slow typing that makes it actually have negative
value. type to clear the entries in your restricted site list and let us
know if that solves the problem or not... you may find thousands of entries
that would take a long time to delete one by one via
"internetproperties-security-restrictedsites" so you may want to delete them
via the registry editor under
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion \Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

I don't use Norton nor do I use IE. The problem was there as soon as I
started using a new Vostro 1500. I suggest that you look at the site
referenced in my first post on this subject. Look at all of the pages on
that site. There are a number of people with the same problem.

just trying to help, but it sounds like i bothered you. i purchased a bunch
of vostros 1500 that came pre-loaded with xp and despite that they were
ordered without antivirus they came pre-loaded with norton that was
immediately removed. these machines demonstrated the keyboard lad problem.
though symantec was uninstalled it didn't remove all the changes that the
installation had made to a system, and that includes the thousands of
entries appeared in the zones files. as an example of the poor design of
norton they made these entries to the restricted site list in an attempt to
block malicious activity, but this approach to web content filtering has
other repercussions as ie7 and office are continuously checking what you
type to see if it is a web address and because of the long list of
restricted sites it results in the keyboard lag. this is the fix that
worked for me. perhaps the fix you provided the link to helps in other
situations for computers with the same symptom. there is no law that says
the pcmservice problem is the only thing that can result in keyboard lag.

ps. i forgot to mention the irony in your comment that i should look at the
site that you referred to above...
you said that disabling the pcmservice solved the problem for you. however
if you read the entire thread you would have seen that though dell techs
agreed that the suggesting of disabling the pcmservice may indeed provide
relief to the symptom described, it is merely a workaround and is not a
solution since the service should be left running. in the thread you
referred to you will see that the dell tech refers the reader to a download
a patch for the dell media direct software as the real answer to the problem
the user described in that thread and which permits the system to continue
to run pcmservice as before...

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop and had no problems with keyboard lag until, I realize now, I transferred over my outlook express from my old laptop. I started experiencing really drastic keyboard lag, contacted Dell support, was told to reinstall windows. Ok fine, so I go through that whole hassle, but with hope, and when I transferred over my files, bam, keyboard lag again. I spent hours going through all my settings for every program I have, bought brand new software for Microsoft Office (pretty penny there), bought a new keyboard, tried this, tried that. I researched on the net and just now completed the msconfig test and yes, unchecking the PCMService in the startup menu did cure the problem. Just out of curiosity, I did a search on "keyboard lag dell direct" and this forum came up. I really didn't want to be without the Dell Direct, I like it, so I thought whatthehell I'll try deleting all my contacts in Outlook Express. I didn't think it would have any effect at all, but I allowed PCMService to be included in the startup, deleted all my contacts, and wonder of wonders, I now have no keyboard lag at all. Now, why don't the Dell techs have a clue? I'd already switched to Outlook and don't plan on using OE anymore anyway, so no big loss. And now I love my new laptop again. Thank you!

Hey John .. You're a life saver .. Thanks for posting the bit about the PCMService .. My Vostro 1400 (2.4ghz, 4GBDDR2) is now working fine .. The keyboard typing lag was unbearable .. Anywho what i did was:
1) GOTO http://www.mlin.net/
2) CLICK STARTUP CONTROL PANEL
3) DOWNLOAD STARTUP CONTROL PANEL (ITS A ZIP FILE)
4) CLICK ON the .exe file
5) GOTO CONTROL PANEL
6) CLICK "Startup"
7) CLICK ON THE TAB THAT READS "HKLM/Run"
8) UNCHECK "PCM Service"
9) Restart the PC

& there you go .. Problem Solved ..
Now I've got no lag in typing what so ever!! Yaye!!

I removed contacts from my Outlook Express and imported them into a download of Thunderbird mail client. Keyboard problems have gone. Did not have to hack my registry or disable services. Strange problem and probably nothing to do with Dell.
