I have an old Dimension 4500 that I'm going to convert to a linux box.
I want to buy a new 1 TB drive for it.

Here's the problem: I don't know whether it's a SATA or ATA interface.
Does anyone know?

If it's ATA should/could I get a SATA card and run a SATA drive off of
it.

I need to old drive, emoved it from the computer a couple of months
ago, and can't find it now (naturally), though maybe I can look
harder. The cable is still in place.

Thanks.

The Dimension 4500 (and 4550) have only two PATA connectors.

The largest PATA drive I have seen is 400GB. Maybe they went up to
500GB, but I doubt much larger.

My suggestion is to buy the largest most cost-effective PATA drive you
can find and leave it at that... Ben Myers

Thanks, everyone.

All those ATA variations get me confused.

Will an EIDE work? Pricewatch has a bunch of 500GB drives listed under
Ultra but a number say EIDE. My reading said that Ultra refers to the
dma transfer.

One last question (I hope). Will ATA-133 work, or do I need ATA-100.
Newegg offers ATA drives too.

EIDE, PATA, and ATA are the same. Go for the 500GB... Ben

ATA-133 will work with an older controller incapable of running at
faster speeds. The 4500 with the Intel 845 chipset will run an ATA-133
drive at full rated speed... Ben

Original Dimension 4500 primary ATA cable would be 80-pin, which also
prefers a cable select jumper setting... Ben Myers
