Dimension 8400 making a lot of HD Accesses

I've had my 8400 for a little less than a year. The only problem I had
was the built-in phone modem card went south and made the whole system
quit (after a long session with tech support in India and working
through taking apart the 8400 one card at a time we found the problem
and I tossed the card since I don't use dialup)

But the last couple weeks I'm hearing a lot of whirring HD access when
I go to open some folders or programs (graphics files and programs in
particular).

Since this never happened before I'm wondering what is going on.

Any guesses?

TIA, SCD in No.Calif.

Right click on each hard drive in My Computer and choose properties. If the
"index this hard drive" checkbox is checked, uncheck it and click OK.

Or it could be spyware

Yep, Tom - that was it! Thanks! Indexing was checked ON (which is OK
now that I know why it was doing it.)

I'd turn it off. It serves no useful function.

Is this the ``allow an indexing service to index this drive'' line? Or some
other line that I don't have because I deleted google.

On the internet, nobody knows you're a jerk.

That's the one. Doesn't have anything to do with Google. It's an XP
function that is worthless.

I'd like to turn it off on my Vista laptop if it doesn't serve a
purpose. MS added search features in Vista that I don't understand
yet. I think I'll just turn it off.

Do you disable the Indexing Service as well, Tom? Mine says "Manual".

No, but perhaps I should have.

I haven't either. I assume removing the ticks should be enough. Perhaps
disabling the service and leaving the drives ticked would do the same thing.
I'm guessing.
