I have a Pavillion 6573z which I am trying to install
a Seagate 6531 hard drive and I get the boot up warning screen
that says smart drive has detected that failure is imminent.
After pressing F1 it seems to work fine.
I tried the drive on 2 other computers (with smart drive enabled)
and they did NOT give the warning.
I went to the HP bios and it shows smart drive is enabled but
I can not scroll down and select it. I tried another drive with
the same results.
How do you disable Smart Drive on HP computers?

Why disable the SMART warning? Why not pay attention to it? Run Seagate's
hard drive diagnostics to find out what is wrong with the drive. Replace the
drive... Ben Myers

Well I think it's giving a false reading since the other 2 computers
did not give a warning message with the same drive.
Is it possible to disable SmartDrive on HP computers?

The drive is giving a SMART warning to the HP, which is capable of interpreting
it and telling you. The other systems may have SMART notification disabled in
the BIOS, and not warn. Best to check their BIOS settings before reaching a
conclusion.

Heed the warning. It is the DRIVE's built-in warning system. Run the
manufacturer's diagnostics. Or put up with the potential of a catastrophic
drive failure in the future... Ben Myers

Smartdrive IS enabled on both the other computers I tried the drive
with. I know youre right about being careful with any data on the
drive and I do plan to back it up but this has become a learning
experience for me in trying to find out why HP has smartdrive
listed in the bios but will not let you change the setting.

HP has SMART permanently enabled in the BIOS to warn people of potential drive
failures. It is this way because HP, along with other name brands, delivers a
system with a BIOS that has relatively few options to "customize". In other
words, HP and others deliver a relatively foolproof BIOS to minimize needless
calls to customer support or field service caused by a customer changing a BIOS
setting to something that is unworkable. Compare this with a retail Asus,
Biostar, Gigabyte or other motherboard with a BIOS that lets you overclock,
change memory timings, etc.

So run manufacturer's diagnostics already to find out how badly off the drive
really is... Ben Myers

Well I think it is giving a false reading since the other
computers did not report the drive as about to fail.

Did you ever run Seagate's diagnostics on the drive? They will tell you for
sure whether or not there is a problem with the drive.

AFAIK, the HP BIOS setup does not have an option to enable/disable SMART.
