Just for the heck of it I installed an evaluation copy under Crossover
Office 2.1 on a Linux machine.
The program has access to everything in my /home directory and didn't show
any of the behavior you noted.
Admittedly, I didn't give it a strenuous test -- yet.
It does look interesting, however.
