Does ECS L7S7A2 let you change CPU frequency?

The documentation and all the reviews i've read say two totally
different things.

The doc at http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/manual_l7.html says that
the "CPU frequency" display in the bios is "Display only: You cannot
make changes to this field.". Yet reviews mention how this
motherboard lets you select anywhere from 133 to 200Mhz in 1Mhz
increments. Which is correct.

The manual file is named l7s7a2_eng11a.zip so it seems to be the
manual for version 1.1a. Maybe version 1.0 (if it existed) didn't let
you change the cpu frequency.

So what is correct? I want to overclock a 2100+ which i currently
have and just want to make sure i will be able to on this motherboard.
My current motherboard will not let you change the frequency and
autodetects it from the cpu. That's what the manual seems to say the
L7S7a2 does. But reviews say otherwise.

Any thoughts appreciated.

After reading a few messages i found out that some people have a 1.1
version of this board so i guess that does exist. I'm going to be
getting it as part of a package so i have no idea which version i'll
get.

As another question, will the beta bioses found on
http://www.ocworkbench.com/2003/ecs/...s/betabios.htm work
with a 1.1 motherboards even though they're meant for 1.1a?

But my original question still stands too.

Yes you can change it. I don't overclock but I was just in there and
changed it from 'auto' to 'manual.'

You did check page 11 of the pdf manual file? It shows
the jumper settings for the cpu multiplier. I'd hazard a
guess and say they only work on unlocked cpus though. Mine's
running 12.5 x 166/AMD 2500+ Barton/Cheepoman Bios.

Yes. The manual explains how to change the multiplier. But i want to
overclock the CPU frequency. So you could theoretically overclock
yours even more at 12.5 x 174 or something like that. Maybe, with
enough cooling, your CPU would survive up to 12.5 x 200... who knows.

My cpu is unlocked. I'm currently running at 14 x 133 with no sign of
problems. What i want to do is run it at 11 or 11.5 x 166. Still
roughly the same overall Mhz but faster because of the bus speed.
However my motherboard *only* autodetects the cpu frequency so i can't
change it.

According to the other guy who posted, he said the frequency could be
changed and that the manual was wrong. Maybe you can check your bios
and see if you can alter the 133Mhz frequency.

Thanks.

PS: my BIOS is 6/19/2003 which I had to flash to get my board to recognize
the Barton 2500.

Don't know why ECS has none of the BIOS posted for this board. I have them
in my file though.

CPU frequency can be altered from 133 MHz to 233 MHz in 1
MHz increments using Cheepoman bio. I'm using 030127 <
Chb127.zip > from him. Flash at your own risk.

http://www.ocworkbench.com/2003/ecs/...e/bios/betabio

is where to get the bios.

Thanks. If, by some chance, i end up with the rev 1.1 version of this
board instead of the 1.1a version, will i still be able to use those
Cheepoman bios?

I'm afraid of things like this now. When i got my current Gigabyte
motherboard i researched the hell out of it and saw that i could
change FSB on the rev 1.2 of it. All reviews and such only mentioned
rev 1.2, nothing else. So I bought one and ended up with a rev 1.1
and couldn't set a 166Mhz bus. Further digging into google archives
showed me that the big change between rev 1.1 and 1.2 was... you
guessed it... the ability to manually select the FSB. Bastards :-)

So you're saying your m/b doesn't have the jumper block
FIDJP1 located between the cpu and the parallel port?

That sux. For overclockability, you might want to try an
ABIT NF-7 board.
