What it is depends upon how the chipset is operating.
All SATA implementations can function as nothing more than a PATA controller
from a software point of view. In this case, the chipset software
installation routine will install support for whatever the PATA controller
should be. No use will be made of any special features offered by SATA in
this instance.
However, many SATA controllers can also operate in an enhanced performance
or RAID mode. In either of these modes, a separate driver is used and
typically must be installed when you are installing Windows. With this
setup, advanced features of SATA are available.
All SATA expansion cards have a specific driver.
