Just a thought, the LCD panel that I have has both digital DVI
and analog 15-pin connections. I don't think that is so uncommon
now a days.

I have a ViewSonic VX2025wm, but the setup you are describing
might find that to be more monitor than it can easily handle. There
is probably a 17" version, though.

Luck;
Ken

Damn, I like that! I haven't looked at monitors yet so I had no idea
that they might be equipped with both types of inputs.
Thanks for your input, Ken.

Standard practice is that all monitors that have DVI have both DVI and
analog. Never seen one that didn't.

You can get a very good 19" dual-mode (DVI / Analog VGA) monitor for
$100 to $120 if you are willing to stomach a $100 rebate (in this case,
the monitor is worth the full $200 to $220 before rebate price, so it's
not to bad). This deal has been running since August with various
retailers, but currently you can find it at PC Connection:

http://www.pcconnection.com/ProductDetail?Sku=6732798

This is a very good monitor; I've bought 3 of them, each from a
different retailer, each about $200 with a $100 rebate (the rebates are
limit one per person, but rebates from different retailers have been
different rebates, in this case).

That's good to know, Barry. I'm actually building two systems - NewEgg
has it all in transit right now - so I can start looking at monitors this
evening. I haven't heard the HannsG brand before but the final price is very
attractive. It might make a good monitor for the daughter. My wife saw a 23"
HP monitor at a Circuit City and developed a gleam in her eye.

I have three of these monitors (the Hanns-G), and they are quite good.
Even at the before rebate price they are a good value. If you check
around, some of the sites that sell them allow "user reviews", and they
are very positive (Newegg has sold this model and had some user reviews).

Another monitor that I have used multiple units of and that I've been
happy with, and that is often sold VERY cheaply (down close to $100,
sometimes, but ALWAYS "after rebate"), is the FujiPlus FP-988D. This is
also a dual mode (digital DVD, analog VGA) 19" monitor, 1280x1024, with
a built-in sound system. However, FujiPlus is bad about paying rebates.
I got mine ($100 rebate), but it took a lot of extra work and
coercion. Tiger Direct dropped them because of their poor rebate
handling, but then has on a few occasions offered them again when they
apparently agreed to allow the rebate to be handled by a 3rd party
rebate fulfillment firm instead of directly by themselves.

I have not yet gotten any of the rebates on the 3 Hanns-G monitors, but
the rebates are being handled by Parago (a major rebate fulfillment firm
in Texas), and two of the 3 are showing valid/approved. All three are
showing status' that are appropriate considering the purchase dates
(which for the 3rd monitor was less than 2 weeks ago).

Barry, thanks for sharing your experience with the monitors and with the
rebates. I'd forgotten how difficult it can be to get what's owed you from
some companies. I'm nearly as bad at submitting them for the rebate!

Thanks, grizz. I have the NexTag search plugin for Firefox. Highlight
and click - PcConnection was right there among a lot of other results.

That's what they are counting on!
