This is an ordinary e1405 core duo with 2GB RAM, Vista Home
Premium, and nothing unusual. It's worked perfectly for months.

Suddenly, its wireless network functionality has become a
problem. When it comes out of standby it may or may not connect.
Releasing and renewing makes no difference. Signal is excellent.

If it's ok when it comes back to life, or after I reboot, it's
solid as a rock.

I cannot find the "repair" function that might have helped in XP.

What could be broken, missing, etc? What other tool can I use
instead of a time-consuming reboot?

What mini wireless card are you using? I have had something similar
happen (not all the time) with my Dell 1390 mini wireless card. I
have an Intel 3945 to replace it but haven't installed it yet.

I also have to reboot when connecting to another network when out and
about and trying to come back to my home network -- I can only do this
if I reboot.

I did find two wireless processes running at the same time that may
have conflicted with each other. Before I install my Intel 3945 I am
going to test my 1390 on the city's network and then back home on
Wednesday to see if the problem was caused by the conflicting drivers.

<clipped>

I forgot to say that I have a 640m which is basically the same as your
laptop. Mine also has 2G RAM, but it has Vista Business as the OS.

have you tried the Fn F2 that turns the wireless on and off.

Thanks. My husband got the answer on another group. Apparently
our network icon was hidden - not in the taskbar. So we couldn't
do REPAIR. That seems to work, though the problem of dropping
the connection isn't fixed.
