ECS K7s5a No video at FSB 133

I have an ecs k7s5a rev 1.0 that has a similiar problem. After I switched to
DDR PC 2700 RAM (Crucial, 2 DIMMS 256 MB each). I get a video signal when I
install a new card, but when I reboot or shut down and restart, no video. It
worked fine with 2 256 crucial SDRAM sticks, but since the change in memory,
I can't get a viseo signal after first boot. I have the latest official
release bios installed ( I forget the number as I can't see it!!) The cards
I have tried are an older Matrox 8 MB PCI and an ATI Radeon 7000 AGP.

As a followup, I cleared CMOS and ran at 100FSB, I have no video problems.
When I run it at FSB 133, (with an Athlon XP 2000 Palamino, memory also at
133), no video at all, I must clear CMOS again to get video and revert to
100 FSB...

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I agree. When you can run at 100 and not at 133 it usually points to a too
weak power supply.

The strange thing is that it ran fine at 133 with the sdram, when I upgraded
to ddr, no video, only change I made to the system...still think its the PS?

It's hard to say. Are you running the most recent version of the BIOS?
Perhaps there's some sort of timing issue. Often the BIOS is in charge
of dealing with such things. You might try tweaking some of the
parameters in there.

Personally, I'd go back to the SDRAM which worked. I doubt the DDR will
make much (any?) difference in performance, anyway.

I have the same problem running DDR memory with an Athlon XP 2400+
on this board (rev 3.1, latest Cheepoman BIOS). It will not
boot at 133/133. However, this *still* happens even after replacing my
350W Antec PSU with a 460W Akasa unit.

In other words, I don't think the PSU is necessarily the problem.

The 350W Antec is a higher quality PSU than the 460W Akasa all the way
around. More watts doesn't mean a thing when it comes to quality. Compare
the labels on the side of each PSU. Antec has a total combined output (TCO)
of 230 watts, the Akasa has 210 and the rails on the Akasa don't have the
amps the Antec does.

The K7S5A is a power pig and extremely fussy. The vast majority of users of
this board have had to go with high quality Antec or Enermax and generally
over 400W with a minimum TCO of 220W. OCWorkbench.com wrote a special PSU
FAQ just because of this board. All the education you need is there is the
ECS sector.

Going faster requires more power and I've seen your problem solved 100 times
by switching to a higher output, quality PSU that this board demands.

I'm against it being a Power Supply issue.

I have the exact same problem. I was fine running 133/133 . . . until
I upgraded the bios. Now no video with 133/133. After a BIOS reset,
then I get video back and must run at 100/100 to play.

No new processor . . . no new memory, so why should my system need
more power now?

Because when you can run at 100/100 and can't run at 133/133 without
problems (higher speed requires more power), it points to an inadequate or
failing PSU.

Have you tried 138/138 with Honey-bios? It's s'posd to be stable at
138 whereas it is not at 133--at least on the K7S5A's. I've tried it on 2/
5's & it ran good; however, I did it right off the bat w/o trying the 133
first. The 6's I've used never gave any trouble with 133 using original
bios. HTH, s

I have had sticks of DDR ram that my rev 1.0 k7s5a did not like. might be
the brand. As for the power supply, DDR memory uses less power than
sdram, and people have had issues with 2 sticks of sdram in their K7S5A
because of the power issues. So it it worked on sdram, cannot really see
and issue with DDR other than it not liking certain brands.
