I had a desktop computer with Vista preloaded. The NIC worked fine.
But I wanted to downgrade to XP. I installed XP but the ethernet card
is not recognized. I thought, OK fine, if XP won't work then I'll put
Vista back on. After a clean reinstall of Windows Vista Home Premium
32-bit version, my computer does not recognize the Network Interface
Card (NIC) even after I install the appropriate driver (file R149798).
In Device Manager, Network Adapters is not even shown. If I click on
View, Show Hidden Adapters, then the Network Adapters category shows.
In the Network Adapters category are listed WAN Miniport (IP), WAN
Miniport (IPv6), WAN Miniport (L2TP), WAN Miniport (PPPOE), WAN
Miniport (PPTP). However, there is nothing along the lines of Broadcom
10/100 Controller listed. Out of curiosity, I did a clean another
install of Windows XP and had the same problem. I did another clean
install of Vista but I still can't use the NIC. Does anyone know how
to get Vista to recognize my NIC so that I can connect to the internet
on this computer? Specifications of the computer are as follows: Dell
Dimension E521, BIOS Version 1.1.11, AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Processor,
1 GB of RAM, 160 GB SATA Hard Drive Model ST3160812AS, CDRW/DVD-ROM
Combo optical drive, Internal Floppy Disk Drive, ATI Radeon X1300 Pro
Video Card with 256 MB of memory, ethernet is built into the
motherboard.

and did you happen to notice any yellow bangs in the dive manager of either
operating system?

Reinstall the card after the OS is installed?

Preceded by an installation of the chipset drivers for the motherboard? I
doubt that Vista has them built-in. It does not have much else built in.

And that board has a hacked-up version of the NVidia chipset.

Certainly I'd think chipset drivers first as well.
