If you have support for both, USB2 is slightly faster at the moment.

You want an external SATA drive. While the current version of SATA
(1?) does not "officially" support external drives, a workaround does
exist. You get a bracket that goes in one of the open slots on the
back of your computer which supports "passing-through" a SATA cable.
Hence, the drive is connected to the inside of you computer, but
powered by a wall adapter. Unless you need portability (which is the
idea of an external harddrive), I would go with this solution. I read
about benchmarks of this once, and SATA whooped up on USB and
Firewire. I searched and found a site that sells the enclosure only,
you provide the harddrive:

Hi Erik,
While SATA is faster, if you want to be compatible with PCs and
laptops on the run, you will want to use USB 2.0. It is slightly
faster than Firewire even though Firewire is rated as faster. Many
different benchmarks have proven this out.
We have a 120GB External USB 2.0 hard drive located at

would like to take a look.

You could also use hot swap bays if you were only working on one
computer or computers with hot swap bays. However, this won't work for
portability.

Hello,
I guess usb2.0 is better because it is more easy to find them on computers.
I have purchased one very nice external harddisk case from etcpro.com. It is
slim and fast, but you need a 2.5-inch harddisk. Don't know if this may fit
you?
