Ok for the simple people like my self
Is it possible to link up a few rechargable batteries and make an external
battery pack to power my laptop when hiking. I have seen these
http://www.star-battery.com/externallaptop.htm
but they cost a small fortune. Don't care about size or weight. My laptop
runs on 11.1volts 8 AA batteries bingo. Or is that just too simple?

I would think your idea will work, but how long will your laptop run on
the 8 AA batteries? You might be better off running several 9 volt
batteries in parallel for increased current.

Are you really hiking? When I hiked WEIGHT was very important.
But aside from weight, I'd suggest trying a gelcell rated at 12v, since 8
AA's are really about 12v. And best, they are rechargeable and have
a high current capacity of several amp-hours (depending on size)
( How do you figure AA's will last over a few minutes? )
Meet an amateur radio operator, make fast friends and find out where
is the next hamfest in the UK. Then go. You will learn and see many ways
to "fix" your problem.
The other suggestion to use 9V batts was clever, and along the right idea,
but talk about expensive! Current would go up, but if you start at 9v,
your laptop would auto shutoff probably at 10v anyway to prevent the
battery from damaging itself.
