> As I accumulate more years, I seem to lose more memories at about the
> same rate (or at least my ability to access my memories). In working
> with Safari (or any browser), I sometimes have a problem something like
> this:
>
> I know that in the last few days I was on a web site that told you
> specifically how to work with a certain item, or how to fix a certain
> broken item, etc. But I cannot remember the web site and the list of
> web sites in "History" doesn't help me. I don't believe the thing I am
> searching for was actually the main purpose of the web site I am
> looking for, but it had useful information I'd really like to be able
> to retrieve.
>
> Is there some way I can search through the web sites in my history for
> key words that can get me back to the site I have forgotten?
>
> Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Yup. There is very specifically a way for that... ...at least for Safari.

Safari stores a boiled down keyword version of each page you visit as a
".webhistory" file, specifically so that Spotlight can search the
contents.

So do a Finder/Spotlight search for your keyword and add "kind:safari
history". If your history goes back far enough, you'll get your hit.

:-)
Is this going to stop the decline in desktop PC sales? I doubt I
You have to prove what they do with the data is "evil".

eg: Are they using it to compile reports about you to the government?

If you're really that paranoid, set up a fake gmail account with
completely fictitious data and use a VPN to access all Google web pages
from a different locale.

And get a pre-paid smartphone if you access Google features while mobile.

etc.

But really, Google's motive is to make money using "big data". In
exchange for your data (whether real or anonymous - they don't care)
they give you all sorts of services in return.

And if you believe that Apple's motivation in supplying iOS maps is any
different or somehow more noble I'd like to hear the details.

comp.sys.laptops.thinkpad is a new official "Big 8" Usenet newsgroup for
discussions pertaining to IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad notebook computers that
should be more widely and freely available than other forums.

Anyone interested in ThinkPad computers is cordially invited to
participate.

In addition to regular Usenet news services, current and past articles
can be easily and freely accessed on Google Groups at
<http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.laptops.thinkpad> (old look)
or <http://groups-beta.google.com/group/comp.sys.laptops.thinkpad/>
(new look).

CHARTER:

comp.sys.laptops.thinkpad is for discussions pertaining to ThinkPad (IBM
and Lenovo) laptop computers. It is NOT an official support forum for
IBM or Lenovo.

General Usenet "netiquette" guidelines as posted in
news.announce.newusers and news.answers shall apply to this newsgroup.
In particular, participants are asked to show courtesy and respect for
other participants, and to avoid the use of offensive language,
excessive quoting, or long signature blocks. Participants are encouraged
to use descriptive Subjects (e.g., "T41 won't boot after disk swap"
rather than just "Help").

The following types of posts are prohibited:

* Off-topic (not directly related to ThinkPad laptop computers)
* Binaries (except for appended text-encoded digital signatures)
* Spam (including excessive cross-posting)
* Make-money-fast or other chain or fraudulent schemes
* Work-at-home or other scams
* Commercial advertisements, "infomercials," or announcements
* Auction notices (e.g., eBay)
* Forged articles (anonymous articles are allowed)
* Personal insults or repetitive flaming (attacks)
* Employment (help and/or position wanted) notices

The use of e-mail addresses from articles posted to this group for the
purpose of sending junk (mass unsolicited) e-mail or for compiling a
list so that others may do so is specifically prohibited.

In the absence of moderation, prohibitions can, of course, only be
enforced by the collective will of the group and/or by after-the-fact
complaints to the offender's service provider. Nevertheless, it is hoped
that this charter will help in getting complaints resolved.

PROPONENT:

John Navas <spamfilt...@navasgroup.com>

RATIONALE:

ThinkPad is a major and very popular brand of laptop/notebook computers,
formerly part of IBM, now part of Lenovo, with many unique features that
set the brand apart from other brands of laptop computers.

Discussions pertaining to ThinkPad laptop computers are currently
carried in:

* comp.sys.laptops:
- generic laptop discussion group
- traffic of 40 articles per day, down from peak of over 100 per day
- will remain for discussions not pertaining to ThinkPad
- Google archive of over 170,000 articles

* ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad:
- invalid newsgroup not carried by many news providers
- traffic of 10 articles per day
- Google archive of over 9,000 articles

* http://forum.thinkpads.com/
- broken down into multiple specific topics
- over 15,000 registered users
- over 200,000 articles

* ThinkPad mailing list
- List: http://stderr.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/thinkpad
- Archive: http://zurich.ai.mit.edu/hypermail/thinkpad/
- traffic of 5-15 messages per day

The existence of ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad and the popularity of
forum.thinkpads.com, and traffic on the ThinkPad mailing list, are
evidence of the demand for a ThinkPad brand-specific forum.

Once it becomes carried widely, comp.sys.laptops.thinkpad is expected to
have initial traffic of at least 20 articles per day.

comp.sys.laptops would remain for discussions not pertaining to ThinkPad
computers. Although some traffic would presumably be siphoned off into
comp.sys.laptops.thinkpad, the creation of a specific subgroup might
re-stimulate interest enough to result in more traffic, and possibly in
the creation of other comp.sys.laptops.* subgroups.

HISTORY: comp.sys.laptops

comp.sys.laptops was created in about 1990. Traffic apparently peaked at
over 100 articles per day before declining to its current level of about
40 articles per day. This decline is believed to be more due to
siphoning off by brand-specific web forums (e.g., forum.thinkpads.com),
and lack of brand focus, not any lack of interest in laptop computers.

Adding specific subgroups (IBM, Toshiba, etc.) to comp.sys.laptops was
proposed in 1994-1995, but apparently went nowhere:
I have an Asix Presto that I've been satisfied with. They sell a DIP
There's a bunch of new really cheap Chinese programmers on eBay. You can
here's the EEVblog review for the TL866 programmer:

> I use the iPad only very occasionally for downloading e-mail. I
> reserve that task for the iMac.
> I'm using IMAP mail administered by my Internet provider.

> However on those occasions when I do download e-mail onto the iPad, in
> the process it somehow writes extra mailboxes to the mail server.
> These M'boxes appear in the Mail app on the iMac and call themselves
> "recovered Messages" and "Default".

> If I delete an e-mail that's on the iPad a M'box called "Deleted

> I have spoken to the local Apple provider who tell me that this
> behaviour is not caused by either the iPad or the iMac.

This is not exactly correct. The mail app on iOS uses different default
mailbox names than many ISPs specify for the special mailboxes. For
example, on my mail server the special mailboxes are, Trash, Sent, and
Drafts. iOS defaults to "Deleted Messages", "Sent Messages", and Drafts.

If you go into Settings -> Mail, Contacts, and Calendars -> <account> -> Account -> Advanced you can specify exactly which mailbox to use for each of these.
> independent repair tech or other solution in Texas? Dallas / Fort
> Worth area, Austin, Houston or San Antonio are all possibilities - even
> Oklahoma. MegaMacs is in Tulsa, I think, and that could be an option.
> Since I was a PC repair tech for many years, I might even consider
> buying some parts and doing the fix myself although Macs are generally
> more difficult to work on inside than PCs.

if it needs more than just a battery, and you really want to fix it
yourself, go here:

iTunes 11.0.3 Updated with Redesigned MiniPlayer
Apple has released iTunes 11.0.3 with a number of playback and user
interface improvements. At its heart, the MiniPlayer remains svelte, but it
gains a track progress bar as well as visible volume/AirPlay control icon
(previously, you needed to mouse over the MiniPlayer for this to appear).
The volume icon appears if you are broadcasting audio to a single source,
while the blue AirPlay icon appears if you have multiple audio streams
selected.

If you clicked the MiniPlayer¹s album cover image in the previous
incarnation of iTunes, a second window opened featuring the album cover and
playback controls at the bottom while the MiniPlayer remained visible as
well. But with iTunes 11.0.3, clicking the image simply expands the
MiniPlayer into a larger album cover view (rather than opening a second
window) and playback controls appear only when you mouse over the
MiniPlayer. Additionally, clicking the three-line Up Next icon while in the
expanded album art view displays the list at the bottom of the window.
(Previously, this view was available only from the standalone MiniPlayer,
and it was not available from the separate album art window). To exit the
Up Next list, click the three-lined icon again. Additionally, clicking the
album art box once more returns the MiniPlayer to its miniaturized form.

The update also makes a welcome improvement to the way multi-disc album
tracks are displayed in Albums view. Where previously all tracks flowed in
succession from one disc to the next without any demarcation, iTunes 11.0.3
separates the tracks according to disc number. (The previous implementation
was maddening when trying to sort out our Mozart and Stax/Volt collections
with upwards of 14 discs in each set).

If you use the Songs view, you can also now display artwork. Choose View >
Show View Options (Command-J) and click the Show Artwork checkbox. This
option on its own displays the album artwork in the Songs view only if
there are several album tracks grouped together ‹ it definitely works
better if you¹ve sorted Songs view by Artist or Album. However, clicking
the Always Show checkbox displays the artwork even for single tracks, and
you can use the Artwork Size slider to step down or up a size. (Slider is a
bit of a misnomer, as you only get three size options ‹ small, medium, and
large).

Finally, Apple promises in its typically brief release notes that iTunes
11.0.3 improves searching and sorting performance for large iTunes
libraries. If you find any other ³enhancements² to the new iTunes, please
let us know in the comments. It¹s available as a direct download from
Apple¹s iTunes Web page (188 MB), via Software Update on systems prior to
OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion (194.1 MB), or via the App Store app on Mountain
Lion (129 MB).
It will be instructive to see how Windows version 8.1 is accepted,
when it is released, and provided that versions gives users the option
to returned to the familiar desktop. Providing that option would give
users a choice and little to complain about.

I also wonder how many people purchased a new machine with Windows 7
before version 8 was released. Anticipating working with a new
Windows 8 interface that I really did not care about, that is what I
did.

Dell's business side is still offering Windows 7, but I am not sure
many know that.
> At least they have a button you can click to go into the OS X
I've seen it in other apps. I think Adobe Apps have a custom dialog so you can't use the System's print-to-pdf function.
Me, too.

The next release of Windows 8 will be less iOSified. Microsoft
tried to drag their OS out of the past, but failed. Apple is
