Trying to delete all files in my temp directory. It says this file
(qpgishs23dl5.tmp ) is a system file and warns about deleting it.

A google search turns up nothing.

Any ideas??

AV scan shows nothing

delete it.
it is usally bad.
anything in the temp folder could be safely deleted at any time.
spyware is usally hidden there.
if it wont let you, then it is open by a process.
the usual files that cant be deleted are used by the system like
performance files. look for strange processes that are running that
might have these files open and end their tasks.

Try using Crap Cleaner (www.ccleaner.com) - its free, and very
effective. It might save you having to piddle about manually in
future.

It might also be worth running a decent virus checker (if nothing
else, the one-off Sysclean program from Trend), and also check to see
if anything might have embedded itself using HijackThis (you can copy
and paste the results into a form at http://www.hijackthis.de for some
pointers on what to pay more attention to, but take the results with a
pinch of salt, as it doesn't know what every program is)

I've got links to Sysclean (and the latest signature file) on my site
at http://www.coreutilities.co.uk (2nd page, about half way down)

It did let me delete it. It just first gave me a warning that it was a
system file and deleting it could cause problems.

So far, no problem.

spyware often labels its files as system files to throw off unsuspecting
users.

Colin:

I d/l Crap Cleaner.
Interesting program. I am a bit hesitant to pull the trigger on this
because it sure lists a hell of a lot of "crap."

I did go through the cookies and identified a bunch that I'd like to keep
(Basically related to certain sites that I visit where I assume the cookies
keep my user code/password to make my access easier).

How can I be assured that out of the hundreds of files, it won't delete
something essential or very important??

Are you pretty confident that the s-ware "knows" not to do that??

Mel

Yes, i`m confident - i`ve used it for about 12 months without any
issues whatsoever.

You can set the options to leave the cookies in place if you`d rather
not have any deleted automatically (also check on the apps tab if you
use Firefox / Opera, as they`re listed under apps)

I agree. I use it frequently.

I suspect there is software which stashes installation files in the temp folder
and then uses them to complete the installation once you've rebooted. It
wouldn't suprise me to learn that some software uses file permissions to try
to prevent users from deleting such files, subsequently "forgetting" to delete
them on its on.

I come up empty on a google search of that filename. I can't infer the
associated program from the filename. It doesn't sound like it was open
and possible to use a util to identify what was using it. Sometimes one
can correlate the timestamp with the use of a particular program or get
some information by opening the file with [only] a text or hex editor, but
it sounds like it is gone now. If... and I do mean IF... one's system is
fully up to date and security settings are sane and they are carefull about
what they install and they are running good/updated anti malware tools,
etc... I don't think I'd sweat it.
