The wizard has successfuly moved the address book in Outlook Express, but
will not move messages, local folders, and connection settings. What can I
do?

There is a whole lot you can do with the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard,
Richard, but you need to dig into the settings a little before you run it.
I suggest you take a look at the very fine article by Gary Woodruff here:
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm Since you're concerned with Outlook
Express, look specifically at the Custom Transfers section.

Incidentally the link to 'aumha' was invalid.

Yes, this is a helpful article, but I had already found it. I had already
investigated and used the settings on the wizard in this way - not difficult
if you follow the instructions and use some intelligence. But FAST
resolutely refuses to move the messages and local folders - I've re-done it
three times and even reloaded Windows XP. It's an absolute pain and I've
wasted hours over it. Now I think I'll just use the Backup facility - having
discovered that this is not loaded by default (why on earth not?) and found
out how to set it up - another waste of time.

I can assure you that the words 'computer', 'Microsoft', and 'Windows' are
now the worst of all possible swear-words in this household!

You're on a LAN? Then just manually copy the files over after you install,
if you can't get it to work properly. You may also want to see the
information here, specifically the OEBackup: http://www.oehelp.com/

What's a LAN?

I've been using a cable connection between the two PCs

Local Area Network, Richard. Usually a base station/router is involved, and
you're sharing an Internet connection, plus have access to each computer on
the LAN for transferring files, etc.
