Firewire vs. USB2

My son wants to record music on his E510 pc. He's looking at amps that
come with firewire outputs, but I always thought that USB2 is just about a
'fast' as firewire. He tells me the advertising says firewire is faster.

The E510 doesn't have a firewire input, but it does, of course, have USB2
inputs.

What's the story?

TIA

Firewire is faster according to what I've ever read tho I never tried
to test it myself. Off topic... USB3 is supposed to be faster than
current firewire but doesn't seem popular yet.

If you're talking about transferring files or streaming video...but
recording music? USB2 should be adequate. IMHO

Can one put a firewire card in a PCI slot in the E510?

On a video production forum I post on, there is talk of new dells having
problems with USB3. They were saying to buy new
Dells with USB2 and add the USB3 yourself. Dell's USB3s don't work that
well.

My son does professional recording with his tower computer, and has
done so for several years. His first computer for recording was a
Dimension 4700 with Intel 925 chipset. The USB2 supported by the 925
was incompatible with his recording hardware/software (Protools), so I
added an USB2 card with NEC chip (the better USB chip), and all was
well. I built his current recording computer with an Intel mobo,
Intel i7 CPU and a ton of memory and hard drive space. Still USB2,
though.

In summary, USB2 is fast enough for high quality professional
recording, and look before you leap. Make sure that the motherboard
chipset (945?) and USB2 are compatible with whatever software he
chooses. Protools is the well regarded high end product from Avid,
but we had to dig through their web site to find their statement about
the lack of their USB compatibility with the 925 and other chipsets...
