It sounds as though the connectors don't have the 'key' which forces correct
orientation.
Locate pin 1 on the motherboard's floppy connector and orient the red (or
blue) stripe toward it.
If pin 1 isn't clearly marked on the board you can locate it by looking for
the key slot in the motherboard's connector.
If, when you view the connector, the key slot is away from you, then pin 1
is located to the right.
With the key slot toward you pin 1 is to the left.
A single, 3.5" floppy drive should be seen as drive A: in the BIOS and under
a DOS / Windows system.
The connector at the far opposite end of the cable should go to the floppy
drive. If you also have a 5.25" drive, or you want to add a second 3.5"
floppy drive, it would connect to the middle of the cable.
If the drive still doesn't work you *may* need to check it for a 'drive
select' jumper.
Most modern floppy drives don't have one so you should be okay.
