Or the Latitude D610/14.1". The 810 is larger, nicer, and heavier to lug
around......

Well a quick look around my office (engineering research group) reveals:

Dell's X1, D610
Lenovo's (formerly IBM) X40/X41 T42/T43 Thinkpad
HP Compaq nc6220
Apple Powerbook 15"

The one's that often get overlooked but are excellent are the IBM
ThinkPad's (now Lenovo). you can get accidental damage coverage on the
warranty that will cover just about anything you can do to it. I have
worked in the warranty repair business, certified with multiple
vendors, and IBM has the best.

Yep, you don't buy IBM for the parts, you buy them for the service. Had
the T43 been out a month earlier, I would have gotten it over my D610.
The Thinkpad's price premium sucks, but if you know someone at a higher
education institution, you can get some amazing deals
