I know I'm light years in arrears on this but here goes:

I play Q3 alot and own doom 3. Can't play doom 3 for obvious reasons.

My current VC is a geForce2 MX 100/200. I am running a p4 with 1 gig
of Ram and an Intel Mobo D845EBT (PC2100) (2.2 mghz)

Am looking at the Geforce 6600 AGP.

Can I run the geForce 6600 with a AGP ver. 2 4X AGP. If not, what
other card would work: Let me play Doom 3 with a half decent FPS.
This game runs at 13 FPS at the moment.

My specs were similar to yours: I had a Geforce2 Ultra, which I had not
upgraded when I put together my new system earlier this year (3 GHz P4, 512
MB PC3200).

I bought the XFX Geforce6800 (256 MB); it had Doom3 bundled with it. It
runs beautifully, at 1280x1024, with 4xAA. If you are really interested in
enjoying Doom3, you are going to want a 256 MB card.

BTW, within one week after buying the 6800, I had upgraded to 1 Gb PC3200,
to solve hard disk grinding, and stuttering when entering a new room in
D3...

Not exactly. I read a review on the 6600GT 128mb and it offers very similar
results to your plain 6800 at a cheaper price.

I have read some of the articles and you have to be very aware of the system
specifications that were used. Some show the 6800 with better benchmarks
and others show them very close. The 6800 can be cpu or power limited on
certain systems and it would be easy to make the 6600GT look very similar to
the 6800 but I don't believe this is the case. The 6800 is a much better
video card. The 6800 card needs a good power supply and a fast cpu to move
data as it was designed to do. OC'ing the 59xx series requires a good clean
power supply to function well. There have been a number of post on forums
other than this one, where the 5900 (XT,SE) would not OC past 440MHz but
after a PSU change they were able to get upwards of 460MHz.

The GF6 6600 GT AGP will work in an AGPx4 slot.

set display resolution to lower in game;
set only 16-bit colors display (& max 16-bit textures)
switch off AA ...
maybe no need for upgrade ...
OC a bit a card ...

It should work just fine. Sounds like a nice upgrade. But I have not seen
the plain 6600 agp cards yet, only 6600GT.

According to one article, they will only make the GT in AGP.
