GeForce 7300 LE Questions

I'm looking at getting a E520 system in the next few days. I'm
considering the GeForce 7300 LE. Dell says that this card has 256 MB
of Ram. However according to Nvidia's site, there are two versions one
with 128 and the other with 256 of onboard RAM.

Which card do you currently get from Dell? The 128 which will support
256 or the 256 that will support 512 if you have a least 1 GB
installed on your system. Dell isn't really clear about which one you
are getting.

I have not read the specs for the E520 but from my own experience with Dell
if they say the card has 256 MB on it, then it has 256 MB on it. If you are
planning on upgrading the RAM then I suspect you are going to be doing
something graphic intensive. If so, I would strongly suggest that you
upgrade the video card to one better than the LE either at the time of
purchase or after you receive it.

To be safe, I would suggest you call the Dell sales folks and ask them.

The most graphic intensive things I'd be doing would be Photoshop, DVD
authoring/playing and likely running Windows Vista with Aero. I just
didn't want the video card slowing anything down in the system. That's
why I was considering the Nvidia card. Don't know if I should get the
ATI one or not though.

I can't offer advice on which brand video card to buy, I'm not that
technically founded. However, given what you will be doing, I strongly
suggest that you upgrade the LE to something far better. CompUSA or Best Buy
or any of other computer specialty stores have a variety to select from.
Just make sure what ever you select is compatible with the E520 :-).

Everything you mentioned is memory intensive. IIRC, Photoshop has up to
3 or 4 copies of the image in memory. I'd suggest 2GB of RAM...

From what I can tell, the card you are talking about uses part of the
system memory.

I ordered the same system and got the integrated video. I then ordered
an NVidia GeForce 7600GS card for $100.

I don`t think the system has the power plug from the power supply for the
7600GS or another card that is of higher end...talked to a tech and he said
I would have to change the power supply out...If there is an after market
connector I am not aware of it...Peace, Harry

Dell lies.

It has 128mb and it is absolute crap. I have two in my drawer and
they're not worth the scrap they are made of. Buy cheap and replace it
yourself with a retail card.

Nope. Dell lies. They're the only major vendor that quotes the memory as
the actual memory plus shared memory.

They do it with both the nVidia and ATI cards that use shared memory.

Huh? Most of the video cards I have seen with a power plug on them attach to
one of the standard 4-pin power connectors used to hook up disk drives, CD-ROM
drives and the like. If the power supply does not have enough 4-pin power
connectors, a 50 cent power splitter will do very nicely... Ben Myers

So if I take everyone's advice and buy an external card verses the
GeForce 7300 LE here are the conditions I'm working under. I would
need to purchase the card from Best Buy (as I have several gift cards
there) and preferably it would be around $100. Would something like
this work or should I get something else? I would like it to be an
nVidia based card.

Keep in mind the most graphic intensive things I'm doing are
Photoshop, DVD playing/authoring, emulating (old arcade games), and
likely running Aero in Vista. Since I'm getting a fast system I don't
want the video card to be a stumbling block and slow everything else
down.
