Getting Gateway to Release IP Address

My son's Gateway 700SE with XP Home is unable to connect to our home
network. He's normally away at college, but has brought the Gateway
home in the past and connected to my cable internet connection without
problem. The current situation seems to be that either XP or the NIC
that's built in to the motherboard won't release an old IP address.
Gateway won't help with this problem without charging because the
warranty has expired.

The home network is a cable modem connected to a LinkSys Hub. The hub
is wired throughout the house. The Gateway seems to be hanging onto
an old IP address which it got the last time my son had the computer
home. We've tried using IPCONFIG /RELEASE and IPCONFIG /RENEW to dump
the old address and get a new one, and the ISP has walked us through a
couple of attempts. The computer seemed to be retaining the old IP
somewhere, but we can't figure out where or how to wipe it out.

We also tried using a USB to ethernet adapter on the 700SE, but that
didn't work (it got a new IP address but wouldn't get the proper DNS
suffix and still wouldn't connect.

My old Gateway with Win2000 is working fine on the hub, as is my
daughter's Imac notebook. Does anyone know how we can clear this
problem so we can get the 700SE to connect to the network?

Have you checked to make sure the TCP/IP config is set to use DHCP, and
doesn't have the address inserted as static?

Yes we did make sure DHCP was on without static IP. The bizarre thing
is that after letting the darn thing sit for a day, my son tried
accessing the Internet and discovered that the USB adapter had
acquired a valid IP address, suffix, and was working just fine.
Somehow, the USB adapter refreshed and works. We have no idea why,
but I guess we can't complain! The integrated NIC is now disabled in
XP.

Now we're wondering if he's going to have trouble connecting to his
college network when winter break is over and he heads back to school.
I think he'll keep my USB adapter temporarily in case the integrated
NIC doesn't work at school.

Yes, we made sure DHCP was enabled and static IP was not. The bizarre
thing is that after letting the darn computer sit idle all day, my son
went back and discovered that he was able to access the Internet via
the USB adapter. Somehow it completely refreshed with a valid IP, DNS
suffix, etc. Don't know how or why, but I guess we can't complain.
The integrated NIC is now disabled in XP.

Now we'll have to wait and see what happens when he returns to college
after break. If he can't get the integrated NIC to work at school,
he'll have to use the USB adapter there also.
