The resurrected Dimension E521 has been doing very well, but tonight I
noticed that it was dead when I switched over to it with the KVM switch.
Diagnostic light 3 was blinking slowly. Pulling the power cord and
restarting didn't help. Lights 3 and 4 started to blink slowly. The system
came back on and ran its cooling fan at a higher speed than normal. I didn't
think it looked good for the motherboard.
Turns out that the blinking lights indicate a processor fault (uh-oh!) or
memory fault (maybe not so bad).
I debated whether to pull the CMOS battery or one of the DIMMs. The DIMM it
was--and even though my initial wiggling did not help, removing and
reseating the second one did. The system POSTed immediately and went right
into Windows XP.
I can't imagine what happened. This system is in a quiet location where few
people go.
