Gigabit switch recommendation

I need a 16+ port gigabit switch.

Looking at Newegg I got confused. Some seem to have
a mix of 10/100 ports and 1000 ports. Others talk about
SFP and XFP...

What is a good brand/model/price?

It is just a switch, my router will go into it, and
all the computers in the house will be connected to it
(plus jacks in a number of rooms that do not now have
computers, but might someday in the future).

Help please.

Thanks in advance,

If you want to go fanless, check out the SMC SMCGS16. We have a couple in
our office, working fine for months.

I should have added that it is going to be in a uninsulated attic, quite
hot in summer, quite cold in winter. It would be quite difficult to
relocate it.

Would a fanless work, or should I look for something similar with a fan?

Thanks.

I don't know where you live, but check the specs before you buy. Most
won't handle those temp extremes.

Just out of curiousity - and which was not your question - I take it there's
a solid reason for not going wireless instead?

I am currently wireless, and it works pretty well. But I have to pull new
coax (quad shielded) through the house, so I decided at minimal additional
cost to pull the Cat6 with it). Now it will be a minor improvement, as I
back up machines from one to another frequently, and this will make it much
faster. But in the future, if I decide to start recording TV on PCs, and
distributing it around the house it will be crucial.

Re Heat. I think I will bring the cables through the ceiling of the floor
below the attic, and install the switch in a vented box on the wall. The
temps are quite extreme in the attic space. The area below has AC and heat.

Thanks,

Take a look at the power connect 2716 or 2724. I have no personal
experience with the 2700 series, but have with the 3000 and 5000 series.
They have given good service.

For the network you are building, you will want to support layer 2 and 3
QOS. IP phones, multi casting, video streaming. Also, I would strongly
advise you to not place it in an attic. It needs to be in a more
environmentally controlled place. A closet. Even the garage would be
better than the attic. Bad juju the attic.
