Gigabyte mobo won't load failsafe BIOS

This may not make sense but here goes...

I can't seem to update my Gigabyte 8A-7xxxx mobo BIOS - I get a write
error using @BIOS. When I try to use the QBIOS utility from the BIOS
screen (pressing F8), it checks the floppy (buzzes), then gives a black
screen with a blinking cursor - I've tried typing but nothing appears.
To make matters worse, when I hit F6 to load fail safe while in the BIOS
screen, nothing appears - no screen pops up. I can Load Optimized
Defaults by hitting F10, that pops up just fine. But not Fail Safe. I
tried using a different keyboard - same result. I cleared the BIOS
(removed battery and unplugged machine) and it reset to BIOS F3 (newest
BIOS is F13). Other than this though, my machine runs Windows XP just
fine - it just worries the crap out of me.

Any ideas?

If it ain't broke, WHY are you trying to fix it? What issues arise
because you have F3 BIOS?
