Also -- how much CPU is the scp chewing up in the encryption at
one end and decryption at the other end.
Just for the fun of it -- try making a transfer via rcp instead
of scp -- if you can enable rcpd for long enough without exposing your
systems to hazards from the outside.
Do your v880s have hardware encryption installed? Does scp know
how to use it?
