What would be a good choice in a laptop for watching movies. Other
than a bright screen (very important to me) what else should I look
for?

Thanks for your help.

You might want to look into a laptop with a widescreen display, such as the
dell inspiron 8600, compaq x1000, etc

The notebook has to be able to play the DVD without using the fan
for cooling.

There are pseudo "notebooks" equipped with desktop CPUs,
that You can not hear the sound of the DVD, because the cooling
fan of the CPU is so loud.

Acer Travelmate 800 and 660 series can for example play
a DVD even at neraly 30 degree Celsius room temperature
without fan noise.

Look for good loud speakers. DVDs look great on my Toshiba 1135 but unless
I'm sitting right in front of it, the volume is insufficient. Easy to plug
in externally amplified speakers though.

Look at the Sony VAIO range, they have a Onyx screen which has a black
finish. That means that the screen is actually shiny like a tv screen.

It doesn't sound like much but once you have seen it you will be impressed.

It is like the difference between matt and gloss finish on your photos.

Bob.

Any new laptop will be fine.

Yes, any laptop,

but a laptop with a desktop CPU is not a laptop,
it's only a pseudo "laptop" where somebody is
maybe able to hear some voices from the DVD
between the fan noise

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook that does a good job with DVDs. But I think that
the new Fujitsu N3010 (15 inch screen) or the Fujitsu N5010 (16 inch screen)
would be evem better. Besides large screens they have fast video
cards/chips (ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 or 9600) and screens that are viewable
from a 160 degree angle -- great if more than one person is viewing the
movie.

Check Global Computers Laptops inc. for prices:

Thank you all for your replies to my query about a good laptop for
watching DVD movies. They were very helpful.

Another question.....would you say DVD movies on a laptop are almost
as good as on a TV (CRT or LCD), not as good at all, or not even
nearly as good? I'm referring only to picture quality.

Thanks

Carly

I would say the laptop would *definetely* be better quality - television
screens don't match up to the quality of TFT displays, I don't think even
the flat screen ones... (they don't need to be as high resolution to display
your typical aerial/satellite/cable quality of video). (just a thought -
the only problem is that you need to have the display match the resolution
of the DVD - does anyone know what resolution DVD film is at? - thought it
was quite small, like 640 by 480 or something....)

I recommend getting an IBM R51p for viewing DVDs. It has flexview, allowing
other people to watch it from a 120 degree radius. It also has a very good
graphics card. However, it isn't widescreen, and if a 15inch screen is
simply not big enough, then consider the Apple Powerbook G4 17inch.

The processors in both of these laptops are quiet (Banias-Pentium and G4),
so hopefully the fan shouldn't go on. I'm not sure if the Apple has the
facility for adjusting the DVD playback speed so that it matches the speed
of playback - would have thought so, though. The harddrive shouldn't be
active during a film, but if it is, the IBM's one's a pretty quite, but I
think the powerbook's one is even more so.

Whatever laptop you choose, I recommend getting a cheap pair of active
speakers to go with it, because no matter the quality, no laptop's speakers
ever seem to provide the presence required for a film. (certainly not my
IBM T40).

Duncan.
