Merry Christmas!
I got my new computer yesterday. Frankly, my computer is pretty slow,
and all the ads that appear on various web pages just serve to slow my
computer down further. I tried uninstalling the active X part so it
wouldn't work in web pages and did, but now if i go on a page with
flash it asks me if i want to install it. No I don't, and i cant get
rid of that prompt.
I did some searching this morning and found No! Flash. Oh my gosh this
thing is wonderful. I don't have to do anything and all the flash ads
are GONE (until I tell it I want to look at them)."

It sits in my tray, I can turn Flash on when you want to visit a site
that uses it for non-advertising reasons, and leave it off

SpywareBlaster also has a "flash killer" option and does many other
useful things -- and it's free and updated regularly. Been using it
for a year or so with no problems.

I have a question not sure if it's related to this. I have DSL and I get these
"phantom" grey pop up boxes that literally come out of nowhere. How on earth do
I get rid of these?

Candy;
No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330904
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...e/stopspam.asp
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.

Internet Connection Firewall will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/npf/

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

Spyware may be your problem.
Check this link:
http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/

For internet pop-ups, try one of these:
http://www.panicware.com/
http://www.bysoft.se/sureshot/stopthepop/index.html
http://www.popupbuster.com/PopUpBuster/
http://www.kolumbus.fi/eero.muhonen/FS/
http://www.endpopups.com/
http://www.adshield.org/

To protect the safety and security of your computer:
Install or enable a firewall IMMEDIATELY, before connecting to the
internet:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283673

Install ALL Critical Updates IMMEDIATELY.
Start/All Programs/Windows Update

Install an antivirus application
Update it weekly
Run it at least weekly

Candy,

With a DSL connection, you are a large TARGET for being attacked. If you
are seeing windows messenger pop-ups it means that your computer is
exposed to a lot of things directed at you from the internet.

The first step is to block inbound connections to your computer - you
should get a router (linksys, dlink, etc) and put it between your DSL
modem and the computer - this will keep outsiders from connecting
directly to your computer.

Next, get Norton AV 2003 or 2004 and install it.

I hate to suggest this, but, unless your machine was fully patched (wich
I doubt it came that way) you could already have a compromised machine
before you even read this reply.

GO to BestBuy or a local computer store and get a router with NAT. You
can thanks us later.

As a quick measure, you could download ZoneAlarm personal version and
try and setup it up:

Start/Run SERVICES.MSG and find "Messenger" and stop it, then set it's
load behavior to something other that 'automatic'. Manual should do.

However, as another posted mentioned you need a firewall when online.
You can download Zone Alarm for free.
