GX260 - replacement hard drive

All,

I have a GX260 with a buzzing hard drive. I've also had a CRC failure
on a file access, so I want to replace the HDD pretty soon. The
machine is otherwise fine. Does anyone know what sort of HDDs are
suitable replacements for this model of computer? According to the
Windows "System Information" utility, the current HDD is an IDE drive,
formatted NTFS, capacity 37GB. I guess that's probably what it came
with.

Any advice gratefully received! If I've omitted any important
information about the computer, please let me know and I'll provide it
if I can.

Ron

Thanks, Tom.

Excuse my ignorance, but is there significance in your saying "PATA/
ATA/EIDE/IDE"? I only upgrade a drive or two a year, mostly for home/
friends' PCs, and it's always been IDE drives until now. Are those
extensions, alternatives or simply synonyms? Or do you mean that the
motherboard supports several standards, and I can choose which to fit?

Magic. Off to pub, then computer hardware shop.

You can use any 3.5" drive variously called PATA, EIDE, IDE, ATA-133, or
ATA-100. On-line sellers often interchange these terms, to the
confusion of many. The GX260 has an Intel 845 chipset, capable of using
the fastest and largest of these drives... Ben Myers

I just ate some synonym toast for breakfast. It was all the same.

Better make sure you clean up, or there will be antonyms all over the
place.

That, being an older system, will use an IDE drive. As Tom pointed
out, those now go by several names that mean basically the same thing.
The only thing you won't want is a SATA drive.

It should also be a 3.5" drive.

A GX260 should handle about any size IDE drive you can put in it. It
seems that is a safe rule with almost all Dell P4 systems. (Verified
as far as back as the OptiPlex GX400.)
