Hard drive won't run in DMA mode.

I have a new Maxtor 160GB ATA drive. System is Windows 2000,
mainboard is Asus A7A. The problem is that the drive wants to run in
PIO mode. In the BIOS, it shows DMA #6 compatability. At first,
there were errors in the event log in Windows. The device timed out
when loading and several other related atapi errors. I removed the
primary ide controller and installed another one. This time there
were no errors but the drive is still running in PIO mode.

The problem is that it's too slow in PIO mode to render video. I know
the system works because my old drive ran in Ultra DMA mode just fine.
The drive is new, I updated my BIOS just in case. But why did the
old drive work with no messing around and this one is being difficult?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Have you tried swapping IDE cables?

Yes I have. I even tried the cable on another computer to test it and
it worked fine. The old drive on the computer worked fine in DMA
mode. I can't figure why this didn't just pop in and work also.
