I'm looking for a second harddrive for my Dell Dimension 8300 desktop.
What would be a good 7200 drive to get that is compatible with the
8300?

Any IDE [ PATA ] hard drive will work. Get what you can
afford, 250 GB is not too expensive.

As I recall, the 8300 also has a motherboard SATA port, doesn't it?

Your 8300 can use both PATA and SATA drives but if you currently have a
PATA drive it would be best(easiest) to get another PATA drive for your
second drive. This is because if you have both types of drive on the
8300 it will only boot from the SATA drive so you would have to tranfer
your operating system to the new drive.

Ken,
I have a Dim4600, that I need to replace at least one DVD-Writer. I also
have a new DimE521. I am considering purchasing a SATA DVD-Writer for the
Dim4600, since it also has two (2) SATA connectors on the MB, like the
Dim8300. This will give me the ability, swap it into the DimE521, if
something goes wrong with its DVD Writer.

Is the boot issue just for HDD's, or does it also include optical drives?
Thank-you for your assistance in this matter.

I can't say for sure but as I understand it, it's just for the hard drives.
