Hi, I posted this before in this venue, but I just can't seem to find
it. Maybe I goofed?

Anyway, I've been getting error messages upon booting, directing me to
press F1 to Change Settings or F2 to Continue. I decided to shut down,
pull the plug and try a new battery. Curiosity, however, convinced me
to boot without a battery!!! "Hmmmmm wonder what would happen"?

The stupid thing booted right into WIN98SE. Duh? Somebody "Splain
please"?

Mike

Hi Mike

If you remove the CMOS battery the BIOS settings are lost, and it
reverts to default settings. So presumably some setting in BIOS was
incompatible with the hardware.

Your problem is probably now solved. - but always the chance of a
loose connection of course.

When you remove the CMOS battery the data is retained for about 30
minutes so that you can change batteries without loseing it. You would
normally wait about one hour to be sure to lose the data. Most MBs
have a jumper to disconnect the battery and discharge the capacitor
that is holding the charge so you don't have to wait. Jim

We dont know how long the battery was out: fair chance it was taken to
a store to find the right replacement. But we can only really guess.
Could be something else entirely.
