I had a problem a while ago in which all of a sudden my Lightscribe
recorder was no longer recognized as a print option - it would record
CDs & DVDs fine but the label printing option was all of a sudden not
recognized.
In addition to being sure you're using lightscribe disks ( I once had
a batch of TDK lightscrbe disks that never would work), and that you
have the latest drivers & Lightscribe software (Lightscribe has it's
own website), you could try the below that I got a whiile back from
Lightscribe support (I had to do the last resort - fix my registry -
nothing else would restore my labelling capabilities). Here's the
superb help I got from Lightscribe online support via an email request
sent from their website (not from HP):
ALSO:
Please check the following settings:
1). In Windows, go to
>Start
>Settings
>Control Panel
>Administrative Tools
>Services
>LightScribeService Direct Disc Labeling Service
Right-click on "LightScribeService Direct Disc Labeling Service",
choose "Properties", go to "Startup type" and select "Automatic".
The display under "Service status" has to be set to "Started".
If the above setting is correct and your drive is still not detected,
try the
following.

SYMPTOMS
You may receive one of the following error messages when you try to
print a
LightScribe Label:
There are no LightScribe devices found on this system.
OR
LightScribe icons missing in Nero or LightScribe Drive NOT detected.
RESOLUTION
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry
incorrectly by
using Registry Editor. These problems might require that you reinstall
your
operating system. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To resolve this problem, verify the following key in the registry and
edit if
needed.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
To edit the registry key, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open text box, type Regedit, and then click OK.
3. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer.
4. Under HKEY_Local_Machine, locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
5. Select Winlogon.
6. "allocatecdroms" key to the REG_SZ type value should read: 0
(Note: the above entry applies to the English language version)
7. Right Click " allocatecdroms " key and modify the value data if
needed.
Note: Systems exhibiting drive not detected symptoms may have a type
value
of “1”.
Microsoft’s default of “0” is required for LightScribe to function
properly.
8. Close the registry window and Re-Boot your system. Registry changes
will
not take effect until after you Re-Boot.
Good luck.
