When I tried to format the 4.3 MB hard drive on my Ultra 10 at using format
command,
I get following error.

Cannot format this drive. Please use your Manufacture supplied formatting
utility.

Any clue or any suggestion.
This drive is SUN drive "part number" 370-3176-01 Seagate (Medallist)
ST34342A.

Thanks four help and support in advanced.

Regards,

NE

I was always told that under no circumstances should you format a SCSI
disk. It *is* done by the manufacturer.

Are you sure you don't just want to label and VTOC the disk?

Hello,

why would you like to format the disk (bad blocks, hangs sometimes, etc.) ?

The Ultra 5/10 is an IDE only system. The ST34342A is an IDE disk (the last letters of the
model no. specify the interface type, e.g. A AT-Bus, N narrow scsi, W wide-scsi, WC
wide-scsi with SCA connector, ...)

You can add a SCSI controller of cause.

There is no need to (low-level-)format the drive. Under Microsoft operating system you use
format to prepare the disk, writing the directory structure and so on.

Under Solaris just label the disk (write the partition information, equivalent to
Microsoft fdisk) and then do a newfs for each slice (=partition) excluding tmp/swap.

Anyway labeling might be suficient as I asume that you want to install Solaris.
