Hi all,

I have upgraded to a P4 2.66GHZ/533MHZ FSB as per HP's website which advises
it supports. However when Installed runs at 2.0GHZ/400MHZ. Shows this in
bios and in windows.

I may have to change jumpers but cannot find any info. on how to do this.

I contacted by email HP Technical Support who advised that the jumpers may
need changed but to contact an HP Authoised Service Center. Surely this can
be doen without paying for it? If it advises on their website it supports
this proc, why do I need to take it to an HP service center to increase
clock speed.

If anybody has any help or ideas on how to do this would be much
appreciated. Link below of specs of system for reference.

According to the manual for the motherboard at the FIC web site, the board has
no jumpers. The manual also states that the 533MHz FSB is untested. I will
speculate that HP asked FIC to build its boards without support for the 533MHz
FSB... Ben Myers

I'm not sure this is true. The 483.uk model has the 2.66G/533 processor.

The FIC documentation also indicates speed switching is automatic.

It may just be a reporting issue. Have you tried any benchmarking programs
that might give more accurate results? Perhaps there is a BIOS setting
that needs to be changed.

I've also seen where some jumper settings have been done with a soldered
wire rather than the more expensive pin and jumper arrangement. You may
need to take a close look at the board. (this may be unlikely.)

Are you running PC2100 memory? or, PC1600? You may need to use the faster
memory.

All seems a bit strange. HP website advises 2.66ghz/533mhz (why do this if
does not support). It does seem as clock speed needs increased to support
speed on HP website but cant seem to find out how to do this. I contacted
HP and there response was to take it to a HP Authorised Service Center for
them to change the jumpers.

If there were no jumpers why advise to take it to HP? If FIC indicates
speed switching why not working (maybe only work with FIC Bios??)

Any other ideas would be great.

Look, I'm just trying to be pragmatic. For years and years and years, name
brand computer manufacturers have had OEM-built boards with less than the usual
retail capabilities. So I will still speculate that HP had either the boards or
the BIOS crippled up to prevent upgrades to 533MHz FSB processors. If it is a
BIOS issue and not a hardware issue, then flashing with the standard FIC BIOS
may fix the problem, or it may not. Even so, an non-HP BIOS on the motherboard
would render useless all the special software made just for HP.

One other consideration: A CPU with 533MHz FSB requires PC2700 memory. The
423.UK shipped with PC2100. Maybe the BIOS is smart enough to clock the CPU
speed down if the right memory is not present? There is little to lose by
trying a stick of PC2700 memory in place of the original memory... Ben Myers

Nice one, never thought of that, will try that and see how i get, if doesnt
work can sell memory stick.

cheers.
