Look, I'm just trying to be pragmatic. For years and years and years, name
brand computer manufacturers have had OEM-built boards with less than the usual
retail capabilities. So I will still speculate that HP had either the boards or
the BIOS crippled up to prevent upgrades to 533MHz FSB processors. If it is a
BIOS issue and not a hardware issue, then flashing with the standard FIC BIOS
may fix the problem, or it may not. Even so, an non-HP BIOS on the motherboard
would render useless all the special software made just for HP.
One other consideration: A CPU with 533MHz FSB requires PC2700 memory. The
423.UK shipped with PC2100. Maybe the BIOS is smart enough to clock the CPU
speed down if the right memory is not present? There is little to lose by
trying a stick of PC2700 memory in place of the original memory... Ben Myers
