hp 5170 won't boot

My hp notebook ze 5170 won't start up after starting it goes through start up but icons do not appear only the wallpaper is present I've tried starting in safe mode, last known good configuration I can't get it to run. Unforturately I don't have the recovery disc. Any suggestions?
