Here's the problem:

My 890C is taking in a sheet of paper to print, and just as the printer
heads move across to the left-hand side of the page, it stops and the two
LEDs on the front flash alternately. Occasionally it does the same but
without picking up a sheet of paper.

Has anyone experienced similar problems? If so, how did you solve it. If
it needs cleaning, I would prefer to do it, than have it professionally
serviced for a high fee.

Steve.

Why not post your question at

http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/cgi...ublic/forum.pl

There's a great group there, and all sorts of valuable parts and
servicing info is available.

Clean and very lightly lube the bar the heads travel on.

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printer.../bpd09144.html has some hints
that may help. I would suspect the most likely case is a misplaced clutch
actuator.

I would suspect the encoder strip may be dirty. You can clean the strip as
shown at the following:

Thanks to you and everyone else on this thread. Have done some cleaning and
lubricating and it seems to be working okay at the moment.

Steve.
