The LJ1020 is one of the unfortunate cost-reduced HP printers that
requires a firmware download before it will operate. Despite some
confusing links, even HP says "The HP LaserJet 1020 Printer does not
support a network connection."

It's not on their list now:

Even the HP print servers won't work with that printer.
You *might* be able to get the printer/print server working by attaching
it directly to a computer, powering both up, running a print job to make
sure the firmware is downloaded, and then swapping the printer over to a
print server without powering it down. If it works at all, it'll quit
working as soon as the power goes off and the firmware image evaporates.
Other options:
Leave the printer attached to a computer that acts as a print server
(and has the ability to download the printer firmware).
Preferred: Replace the printer with one that has PCL or PostScript
built into a ROM.
