Hi All.
I started a new topic since my old one seems to have wandered. <bg>
I got the HPLJ 3100 sort of working in Windows Visa Home Premium using the
XP
drivers.
Here are the steps.
1. Disconnect the printer and reboot the PC.
2. Remove all traces of the drivers from failed attempts ... delete the
C:\JETSUITE folder, delete jetsuite.ini from C:\WINDOWS, etc. Go into the
registry and try to remove all the stuff that talks about jetsuite or the
Laserjet 3100.
3. Soft reset the printer by holding down the stop/clear button for 10
seconds.
4. put the files from the winxp driver disk (I had them in a zip file) in
the root directory of some drive. I used C:, you most likely could use any
drive's root, put the files on a CD, etc. They need to be in a root
directory because the install program looks for files relative to the root.
You'll get an error saying "out of memory or files in wrong places" if you
don't use the root.
5. There are two files in the installation package root directory -
install.exe and setup.exe. I haven't figured out what setup.exe is for ...
I could only install the printer using install.exe, and that's the file
that's in the autorun.inf file, so use it. Open windows explorer and point
at the folder (root directory) where you put the files. Right click on
INSTALL.EXE and choose Create Shortcut from the context menu.
6. Right-click on the shortcut that gets created and choose Properties
from the context menu. Click on the Compatibility tab and tell it to use
WinXP with SP2 compatibility. Click OK out of the properties window.
7. double-click on the short-cut you created and jetsuite installation
will start.
Just like it used to in WinXP. (or win98, or 95, or 3.1 <VBG>
8. Once the install is done and you've declined the registration process
(I don't think HP wants to know about you any more) and the free
screensavers, shut down and reboot.
9. Windows will start up, as will jetsuite. You'll get a small window
that says "ini file not found" or something like that. Click OK. You
should have the jetsuite icon down in the taskbar. Don't mess with it.
10. Shut down and plug the 3100 intro LPT1. Make sure you've set your
parallel port to ECP or EPP (my new Acer desktop with Vista had the parallel
port set to SPP in the BIOS, so I changed it for bidirectional parallel
porting).
11. Boot up. Jetsuite will start and you'll get the error message again.
12. Print something graphical and smile.
I say graphical because it doesn't seem to want to print text. Adobe pdfs
print fine. Internet explorer prints the graphical elements of web pages
but not the text. For instance, I printed out
www.google.com, got the
google logo and the text entry box and the two buttons below it, and the ad
for google toolbar, but there's no text in the buttons below the text entry
window (if that makes sense). If I print out a windows test page from
printer properties, I just get the windows logo in the uppoer left, no list
of drivers or other text at all. Funny thing, the first time I printed a
windows test page, it had the Vista logo, the next time, it had the XP logo.
I'm gonna go load MS Office and see if I can print stuff at all from there.
Also, there's some sort of font pack available at hp.com for the 3100 but I
don't think that will help.
Any ideas? I feel so close to getting this right!
Thanks!
Regards,
Rich ()
