Bill,

Here are the specs for your computer:

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/documen...7&cat=prodinfo

As always it seems, HP does not have drivers for its computers posted on its web
site, so you have to dig for them.

The motherboard has an Intel 810L chipset, so any drivers needed for the
chipset, including graphics, can be found at www.intel.com .

I'd have to examine the modem to determine its chipset, but once determined, the
modem chipset manufacturer provides reference drivers which work just as well as
any.

Look at the Crystal sound chip and write down its chipset identifier in the form
CSnnnn, e.g. CS4237. Once again, search for Crystal drivers, which might also
be found on the Intel web site.

All these chipsets were incorporated into systems after Windows 98 was released
by Microsoft, so the drivers will not be on the Windows 98 CD... Ben Myers

Look on the side of the modem card; I think you will find it is
a GVC (and there will be a model number as well) and the drivers
are here: http://www.gvc.ca/

are here:

Hi ,
Thanks for all your help. I will check audio chip number and modem board. I
promise I won't make the format w/o drivers again. Lesson learned. Again
thanx to all replies for help.

Bill,

Don't be so hard on yourself. Really! Blame Carly. Blame HP for having a web
site of third-world status, lacking the drivers and documentation which people
may need for their HP computers. As a sanity check, look at the IBM, Dell,
Gateway, and even ex-Compaq (now part of HP) web sites to see comprehensive sets
of drivers and documentation available for most models of computers. You can
still go back and find info on old Dell 286s! IBM's web site STILL has fairly
complete information for its long obsolete PS/2 computers with the laughable
MicroChannel boards.

There is such a thing as quality technical support with comprehensive info on a
web site. HP does not measure up. Their approach to on-line tech support is
comparable to the Pacific Rim manufacturers who produce boards accompanied by a
user's guide that does not even have the manufacturer's name in it. In other
words, once the product is sold, HP really does not want to hear from you again
until you want to buy a replacement. Unless you've gotten so ****ed off in the
meantime that you decide to switch brands.
