Hp Pavilion Xe783 adding memory?

Hi I have a Hp Pavilion Xe783 700 mhz.Took me for ever to add XP pro
even did bios updates,But it will only take 1 stick of memory ,I
purchase 2 sticks of 256 both the same but if I put the 2 sticks in it
will not boot up gives me a window error .Either one by its self works
ok.Any I deals on how to add the 2 sticks?
