HP Pavillion 520c

Hi,

My cousin owns an HP Pavilion 520c with 512MB of PC133 SDRAM. I just
upgraded it to SP 2 of Win/XP ... and the bootup now crawls ... the
icons take a minute or two to load by themselves. I'm assuming (although
I don't know) that SP2 just takes more RAM. So I thought I'd look into
an upgrade. The HP website says that the max RAM capacity for this
computer is 1GB. It has two slots.

I emailed HP twice. One person told me that there is one slot with one
512MB card in it, and one open slot. The other person told me that there
is one 256MB card in each slot (with no open slots) ... but that the
computer is not capable of holding more than 512MB (even though the
website says 1GB, he said that the website was wrong).

Can anyone help clear this up for me?

The model number of the motherboard is A7V-VM.

I had the same problem finding the exact match for my dad's Pavilion.
But, if you could find the right one listed on the ASUS site, then I
would think that their information would be more trustworthy than
HP's.

XP should run at a tolerable pace with 512Mbs of RAM. At least, until
you start multitasking or running hungry applications.

Check your hard drives transfer modes and make sure that they are
still running in DMA. I have encountered a few instances with XP where
the transfer mode with be spontaneously set back to PIO and never get
reset to a higher speed.

Man that ****ed me off the first time it happened! I couldn't figure
out what the hell was going on for like a week!

Does your BIOs boot screen show a slightly different model
designation?
